Which Chinese medicine body type are you?

Posted by

Did You Know?

All ancient health philosophies talk about "constitution", which basically means how you're built & wired genetically. I'm going to help you to determine what some of your own strengths and weaknesses are, so you can improve your health in a way that's right for YOU!

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Much of my training is based in TCM, which is one of the most ancient of healing philosophies. You've probably seen this symbol , which is used in TCM and stands for Yin and Yang. But more than that, it illustrates balanced Yin and Yang, which is the ideal base for good health. Here are 3 basic body types-

Which one are you?

(more yin) (balanced) (more yang)

If you're built more Yin, your tendency to get unbalanced will be to get even more yin. Ditto with a Yang build... It is easier to unbalance in the direction of more Yang. A balanced build is tougher to unbalance, but it can certainly happen and push you in either direction. So, what does it mean to be too Yin or Yang?

Yin tendencies

Yin energy is very expansive, and when you're too yin you will lose energy too quickly. When I say energy, I'm talking about life force energy or Chi, as it's referred to in TCM. When you're too Yin and start to feel this energy loss on some level, the natural tendency can be to use caffeine, sugar & other carbs, or even mentally staying over-excited to create the feeling of more energy. We've all seen Yin people with seemingly boundless energy, but it's not really coming from a stable, grounded place. Think of it like a car- You might be doing 80mph down the highway, but are you doing it like a V8 Cadillac or like an old school VW Bug?

To bring Yin back into balance

It's comical, but these balancing influences do not come naturally, because your body will crave more Yin. So use discipline and after several weeks you'll feel the positive change. Here are the foods and exercises that help balance excess Yin:

Bone Broth

Ingredients

  • 3-4 pounds beef marrow and knuckle bones
  • 2 pounds meaty bones such as short ribs
  • ½ cup raw apple cider vinegar
  • 4 quarts filtered water
  • 3 celery stalks, halved
  • 3 carrots, halved
  • 3 onions, quartered
  • Handful of fresh parsley
  • Sea salt

Method

    • Place bones in a pot, add apple cider vinegar and water, and let the mixture sit for 1 hour so the vinegar can leach the mineral out of the bones.
    • Add more water if needed to cover the bones.
    • Add the vegetables bring to a boil and skim the scum from the top and discard.
    • Reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 24-72 hours (if you're not comfortable leaving the pot to simmer overnight, turn off the heat and let it sit overnight, then turn it back on and let simmer all day the next day)
    • During the last 10 minutes of cooking, throw in a handful of fresh parsley for added flavor and minerals.
    • Let the broth cool and strain it, making sure all marrow is knocked out of the marrow bones and into the broth.
    • Add sea salt to taste and drink the broth as is or store in fridge up to 5 to 7 days or freezer up to 6 months for use in soups or stews.

Yang tendencies

Yang people can bull through all kinds of things with seemingly no effect. Key word seemingly... The effects do eventually take their toll, sometimes in a sudden event, like a heart attack. The unbalanced Yang person can abuse their body with great cocky-ness about the whole thing. They never feel the taps on the shoulder that a Yin person does, so one day they get decked with the 2X4!

To bring Yang into balance

Again, this will take discipline! Go easy on heavy meats.... You can eat them, but they should be like a garnish to the veggies instead of the main course. These are the foods and exercises that help to balance too much yang:

Big salads and lightly cooked veggies, melons

Walks in nature and yoga

This is a basic overview

When you understand how your body is built, you can make the necessary choices to stay balanced. Please don't take this article to be "all or nothing"!! If you are built yang, for example, and you love pounding weights at the gym, that's fine.... Just balance that with walking, swimming or yoga a couple of times a week. Ultimately, it's all about the balance.
