ADHD Awareness

Did You Know?


October has been deemed ADHD awareness month (backed by the pharmaceutical industry) in an effort to make people believe it is a legitimate disorder. Don't get me wrong, many children and adults do have very real problems with focus, concentration and hyperactivity. I've seen the number of people with these symptoms grow over the 26 years I've been in practice. But there is no medical test for ADHD (diagnosis is based on someone's opinion about the person's symptoms) and medical authorities are unsure what causes the symptoms. The pharmaceutical industry has developed a number of drugs to promote as a solution, but they really don't solve the problem. I am going to help you to understand what ADHD actually is and some causative factors you can control to help yourself or your loved ones. But first, here are the statistics regarding the numbers of people in each age group who are on ADHD drugs (2013 numbers).

Some of these people are just "different"


Yes, they are more difficult to deal with, but these people are often great innovators. Tough as it is to have one of these folks as a child or spouse, it is a shame to stifle this enthusiasm & creativity with a drug. The following are people who had the symptoms of what is now called ADHD:

The athletes: Terry Bradshaw, Michael Phelps, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Babe Ruth, Carl Lewis, Greg Louganis, Jackie Stewart, and Magic Johnson.


The authors: Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Samuel Clemens, Emily Dickenson, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, George Bernard Shaw, Henry David Thoreau, Leo Tolstoy, Tennessee Williams, Virginia Woolf, Hans Christian Anderson, and William Butler Yeats.


The entrepreneurs and leaders in business: Andrew Carnegie (Carnegie Steel, Carnegie hall, Carnegie Mellon University and more), Malcolm Forbes (Forbes Magazine), Henry Ford (Ford Motor), Bill Gates (Microsoft), David Neeleman (JetBlue), Paul Orfalea (Kinko's), Ted Turner (Cable News Network), Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Group) and Walt Disney.

That being said, some people are truly "out of control"


In this case, you are looking at an irritated, inflamed nervous system. Here are some basic factors that contribute to this irritation. Minimizing these can bring great relief!


EMFs- Sleeping too close to electromagnetic fields causes your nervous system to never truly relax and rejuvenate while you sleep. Lots of exposure to phones and computers during the day can also affect some sensitive people. And for heaven's sake, don't buy light up shoes! They send constant shocks through the nerves.



Mold- Mold is a neurotoxin and can not only contribute to ADHD symptoms, but can also cause fatigue, foggy headedness, balance or coordination problems and chronic infections. It's easy to test your environment to see if you have current issue. Microbalance Health sells inexpensive mold test kits you can order. If it turns out you have mold in your environment, let me know and I can give you resources to handle it. Keep in mind that a former exposure can continue to cause symptoms that can be handled with natural remedies.


Pesticides- Because these kill bugs by destroying their nervous system, they can create irritation on ours and cause anxiety and hyperactivity. Spray around the outside perimeter of your home only and use essential oils inside the home to repel bugs.


MSG & artificial sweeteners- These can cause the exact symptoms of ADHD, and are in nearly every processed food. They also appear in gum, mints, toothpaste, and some medicines and vaccines. Here's a link to help you understand all the names these chemicals can go by.


Food allergies- Just removing gluten, dairy and corn makes a HUGE difference for most people! You must be off these simultaneously and for at least a month to see the difference. You can then add back one at a time to see which might be the culprit, or if all 3 must continue to be avoided.


Sugar- Be aware that sugar in all forms contributes to brain inflammation, which can cause ADHD symptoms.


Supplements can help!

There are many products you can get at your local health food store or online that are designed to help ADHD symptoms. Every person is different, so if you're not working with a practitioner, you might have to try a few to find what works best. And if you're on medication, you definitely need to work with someone like myself to guide you through what is safe to use.

The bottom line

What I want to leave you with is this- Don't buy the label ADHD. Yes, these symptoms are real, but they are not a disorder.... they are a sign of either 1) genius and/or exceptional ability or 2) nervous system irritation. Feel free to contact me at  debra@nature-heals.com if you need more help.
