Have you ever heard a sick person say, "When you have your health, you have everything"? We toast to each other's health, and value it tremendously. This is for good reason; the quality of one's life is directly related to the quality of their health! In the U.S., we spend 10% of the nation's gross national product on hospital and medical care. We have more doctors and hospitals than nearly any other country. One would think that this would assure our health, yet the United Nations World Health Organization continually rates our population as having one of the lowest general health indexes of any industrialized nation. In other words, the general health of most Americans is poor. The World Health Organization defines health as follows: "a state of optimum physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity." So, good health is much more than just getting through your day. Healthy people are vibrant and alive! A big part of this health problem is that we've been taught to believe that if we relieve the symptom, we have created health. Think about the different commercials we see: How many times have you seen a commercial where people eat chili dogs and fried onion rings with glee because they just took their high potency stomach acid reliever? How many people do you know who have taken an over-the-counter pain reliever for days or weeks at a time? How many take asthma medications to control the symptoms? How many are on anti-depressants? None of these "cures" is actually a cure. These drugs make the symptom go away, but do not solve the underlying cause of the symptom. When you stop taking the drug, your symptoms come back. That is no solution at all! Yet we are bombarded through television, radio, and magazine ads with images of "healthy" people on drugs. Our mission is to restore you to health. We don't mean just a lack of symptoms, we mean honest to goodness health. We will also educate you very thoroughly about how to maintain your health. Health can be achieved and maintained when your emphasis shifts toward creating optimum function, not simply removing symptoms. |
When people are under stress, their health can suffer. Most of us do realize that we feel worse when we are "stressed". But what, exactly, is stress? Stress is anything that causes your adrenal glands to release special hormones called "fight or flight" hormones. They are called this because these hormones prepare your body for physical action, to fight or run away from whatever is stressing you. Unfortunately, our modern stressors are usually not a single enemy that we can fight or run away from. Therefore, we tend to feel constantly stressed. This constant stress can cause our health to break down. If you would like to learn more about these actions in your body, I highly recommend a book by Dr. Hans Selye called The Stress of Life. In the United States, many people are on psychiatric medications to "help" with anxiety, stress, and depression. These drugs are not designed to heal the nervous system, so they do nothing to treat the underlying causes of stress. They just cause a person to "zone out". For more information on the ineffectiveness of psychiatric treatments and the dangers that these drugs pose, go to the website of a group called Citizens Commission on Human Rights, at www.cchr.org. In our office, we deal with stress in different ways, according to what will help the person the most. We also work to promote healing from the after-effects of chronic stress. Here are some methods we use: Nutrition: You need certain nutrients to stay strong and deal with stressors more effectively. Many junk foods, particularly those with sugar and caffeine, can actually cause stress responses in your body. When people crave these stimulating foods, it is often a sign that they lack proper nutrition to keep their energy up. We work with individuals to determine their unique nutritional needs. Homeopathic remedies: There are many fine remedies that will help you through stressful times. We test each person to determine what remedies can be effective. Herbs: A class of herbs called "nervines" can work to heal your nervous system, and ease the after-effects of chronic stress. It is best to have a practitioner test you for the correct herbal formulas. Acupuncture: Chronic stress can lead to blockages in energy flows in your body, and these blockages interfere with your ability to relax. Acupuncture treatments can open your ability to relax again. As you can see, the methods we use at Natural Health Solutions do not just "put a band-aide" on the problems of stress. Our methods actually promote healing of the nervous system, working on the underlying causes of chronic stress.
