January, 2009 Dear Patients, Friends & Colleagues, Happy New Year!! This is such a great holiday, because it gives us a chance to put past mistakes behind us and start anew with goals to flourish and prosper in all aspects of our life. As you think ahead to what you want to accomplish in 2007, I'd like to give you some tips on how to stay healthy and age gracefully. First, please understand that no pill or natural remedy can ever take the place of good lifestyle habits. No amount of work on one area of your life can make up for ignoring another- health and well-being comes down to leading a balanced life. Naturopathic philosophy states that we are a balance of physical, mental, emotional & spiritual components. If any of these are given less attention than the others, our health will suffer. Take a moment and look at your own life. Draw a mental “pie chart” to see what percentage of attention you are giving to each of these areas. This will help you to see where you need to set goals for this new year. With this in mind, here are my tips for a healthy 2007: Physical - This can be tough in our culture, because of the lack of availability of fresh, unprocessed foods and our busy schedules that don't always leave us spare time. I urge you to put the following things at the top of your priority list. If you do this for 8 weeks, you'll see that you actually feel so much better that you end up being more efficient, watching less tv or other “veg-out” activities and actually end up with more time! Sleep 7 hours per night as an absolute minimum. Move all electromagnetic fields away from your bed (see my website for details) and be sure your room is completely dark. Drink 6-8 glasses of pure water every single day. Eat 1-2 servings of fresh fruit and 3-4 servings of veggies daily. Review the “General Guidelines for Good Nutrition” article on the website for more dietary fundamentals. Exercise daily if possible; 4 times a week as a bare minimum. Do something you enjoy, so this isn't a chore and just one more thing on your to-do list! Be sure your bowels move at a bare minimum once a day and preferably 2-3 times a day. If the above basics don't do the trick to keep you eliminating regularly, email me and I will help you to determine what else to do. Mental - Stimulate yourself mentally to exercise your abilities. Do whatever you enjoy to accomplish this, such as reading, going to the museum or Fernbank, doing crossword puzzles... you get the idea. Emotional - It's funny how much our emotional health is tied to the physical, mental and spiritual balance of our lives. First, be sure you have these other elements of your life in balance. If you do, yet still feel emotionally “off”, try taking a walk or connecting with animals or volunteering at a shelter. My good friend used to volunteer at Grady, rocking babies who were born addicted to street drugs. This always got her focus restored and put her own problems in perspective, along with letting her do something to truly help another human being. Feel free to email me if this area of your life is a struggle. Spiritual - Get connected with your own spirituality, whatever your background is. Get out in nature and experience the lift you will naturally get. Gaze at the stars or the clouds and let yourself be filled with peace. It's very important to do this regularly. My wish for you in this new year is that you regain balance if you've lost it, and that you enjoy all that life has to offer. Know that I am here to help and support you in any way that I can. Yours
