What is Good Health?Have you ever heard a sick person say, "When you have your health, you have everything"? We toast to each other's health, and value it tremendously. This is for good reason; the quality of one's life is directly related to the quality of their health! In the U.S., we spend 10% of the nation's gross national product on hospital and medical care. We have more doctors and hospitals than nearly any other country. One would think that this would assure our health, yet the United Nations World Health Organization continually rates our population as having one of the lowest general health indexes of any industrialized nation. In other words, the general health of most Americans is poor. The World Health Organization defines health as follows: "a state of optimum physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity." So, good health is much more than just getting through your day. Healthy people are vibrant and alive! A big part of this health problem is that we've been taught to believe that if we relieve the symptom, we have created health. Think about the different commercials we see: How many times have you seen a commercial where people eat chili dogs and fried onion rings with glee because they just took their high potency stomach acid reliever? How many people do you know who have taken an over-the-counter pain reliever for days or weeks at a time? How many take asthma medications to control the symptoms? How many are on anti-depressants? None of these "cures" is actually a cure. These drugs make the symptom go away, but do not solve the underlying cause of the symptom. When you stop taking the drug, your symptoms come back. That is no solution at all! Yet we are bombarded through television, radio, and magazine ads with images of "healthy" people on drugs. Our mission is to restore you to health. We don't mean just a lack of symptoms, we mean honest to goodness health. We will also educate you very thoroughly about how to maintain your health. Health can be achieved and maintained when your emphasis shifts toward creating optimum function, not simply removing symptoms.
